Rim-Driven Thruster vs Pod Propulsor: Working Principles & Core Differences

Time:2026-09-18 Visit:139 Occasion Author:FUBER

In modern marine and underwater robot power systems, pod propellers and rim-driven thrusters are two widely adopted advanced propulsion devices. Both eliminate conventional shaft propulsion structures and feature strong adaptability, low noise and modular design. However, they differ fundamentally in driving principle, structural design, hydrodynamic performance and application scenarios. This article elaborates on the working principles and compares core engineering characteristics of the two thrusters.

1. Working Principle of Pod Propulsor

The pod propulsor is an upgraded form of traditional marine electric propulsion systems. The complete power unit is mounted underneath the hull as a suspended pod structure. The driving motor is fully sealed and integrated inside the streamlined pod housing, removing lengthy hull transmission shafts, gearboxes and other complicated components.

Its core working principle: The vessel power supply delivers electricity to the built-in motor inside the pod. The motor main shaft extends outward through the pod casing and directly drives the external propeller to rotate at high speed. Reaction force generated by the propeller pushing water creates forward thrust for the vessel. Meanwhile, the entire pod assembly can rotate 360° via the rotary base. It enables steering, sideways movement and station-keeping without conventional rudders, delivering exceptional maneuverability.

Core Structural Features

  • Drive Type: Central Shaft Drive, built-in motor + central transmission shaft + external propeller

  • Structural Layout: Motor encapsulated inside the pod; propeller mounted externally on the pod

  • Sealing Design: Penetrating transmission shaft exists, relying on shaft end dynamic seal for water resistance

  • Application Scenarios: High-power large vessels, mainly luxury cruise ships, research vessels and offshore engineering ships

2. Working Principle of Rim-Driven Thruster (RDT)

Rim-Driven Thruster (RDT) is a new generation of shaftless underwater propulsion device. It completely revolutionizes conventional central shaft drive structure and serves as a core power component for small underwater robots and special vessels. The whole unit adopts an integrated annular duct design with simple structure and ultra-high integration.

Its core working principle: The central transmission shaft and hub structure are eliminated. Motor stators are embedded on the inner wall of the annular duct, while rotors are fixed to the outer edge of propeller blades. When powered on, the stator magnetic field drives the outer annular rotor to rotate. Blades spin synchronously with the outer rotor to cut water and produce thrust. The center of the thruster is fully hollow, allowing unobstructed water flow and greatly improved flow field smoothness.

Core Structural Features

  • Drive Type: Rim-Driven Drive, no central shaft and no central hub

  • Structural Layout: Motor integrated on the outer rim of duct, blades arranged centrally, monolithic integrated forming

  • Sealing Design: No penetrating moving shaft, shaft seals are not required, greatly enhanced sealing reliability

  • Application Scenarios: Medium & low-power precision equipment, widely used for AUV, ROV, unmanned surface vessels and underwater detection devices

4. Summary

In conclusion, the core difference between pod propulsors and rim-driven thrusters lies in power driving logic. The pod propulsor is an optimized upgrade of traditional propulsion architecture. It delivers high thrust via central shaft transmission with strong load capacity, suitable for large vessel operations. The rim-driven thruster adopts disruptive shaftless driving design. Featuring hubless structure, no shaft seal, low noise and high integration, it is better suited for compact, precision, long-endurance underwater robots and special vessels.

Neither type is universally superior. They serve different application positioning. Pod propulsors are preferred for large offshore engineering and commercial ships. Rim-driven thrusters are selected for underwater survey, intelligent unmanned equipment and silent operation missions.
